YOU CAN'T
OPTIMISE EVERYTHING.
So stop trying. Performance Margin is aviation safety science applied to endurance sport - what to work on, what to protect, and where to keep your margin.
The Show
Every week, aviation safety science meets endurance sport.
Fatigue. Situational awareness. Decision-making under load. Automation. Just culture. These are the disciplines that keep aircraft in the sky, built over decades and paid for in accidents. They have almost never been applied to how we train, race and perform.
Performance Margin is where that crossover happens. Some weeks that's a solo episode taking a concept from the flight deck and putting it to work in a training week. Some weeks it's a conversation with someone whose job runs on those disciplines - clinicians, investigators, coaches, operators.
There's no shortage of shows telling you how to optimise everything. This isn't one of them. In aviation, a margin is the reserve you protect on purpose, because you already know the day can go wrong. It's not waste to be squeezed out. It's the plan for the version of the day you didn't forecast.
Everyone listening has a job, a family, finite hours and a finite capacity to recover. You're not un-optimised. You're constrained. That's a better place to start.
THE WORKSHOPS
FOUR SESSIONS.
ONE FRAMEWORK.
WORKSHOP 01
THE FATIGUE FACTOR
Fatigue is the most underestimated risk in high-demand workplaces. This session helps teams recognise fatigue before it degrades performance, safety, or wellbeing - and gives them practical, evidence-based tools to manage it at an individual and team level.
DURATION
90 mins
FORMAT
In-person / Virtual
BEST FOR
Shift-based teams, operations
WORKSHOP 02
SPEAK UP. PERFORM BETTER.
Aviation has learned through catastrophic failure that silence kills. This session builds the conditions where people challenge safely, speak up honestly, and communicate under pressure - even up the hierarchy. Rooted in Crew Resource Management and psychological safety research.
DURATION
90 mins
FORMAT
In-person / Virtual
BEST FOR
Leadership, healthcare
WORKSHOP 03
THE PRESSURE PARADOX.
Stress and time pressure don't just feel bad - they measurably degrade decision quality, narrow attention, and break team coordination. This session draws on what high-stakes aviation environments have learned about performing under fire, and makes it actionable for your team.
DURATION
90 mins
FORMAT
In-person / Virtual
BEST FOR
Management, logistics
WORKSHOP 04
THE DECISION TRAP.
Good people make bad decisions - not because they're careless, but because human cognition has predictable failure modes. This session surfaces the biases, heuristics, and system pressures that lead teams astray, and builds practical frameworks for catching them before they become consequences.
DURATION
90 mins
FORMAT
In-person / Virtual
BEST FOR
All teams, engineering

"
...instructor qualities, a great facilitator that taught and consolidated with the audience being drawn. Of all the HF sessions I’ve had, this was the best presented, and I saw a complete room engaging. Unusual, but I actually enjoyed it for once.

WHY WORK WITH ME
A RARE BLEND.
PRACTICAL BY DESIGN.
Active RAF Human Factors Facilitator
I don't just teach this material - I deliver it operationally in a safety-critical aviation environment.
That's a level of credibility most corporate trainers can't touch.
Evidence-based, not motivational
Everything is grounded in peer-reviewed human factors research and real incident analysis - not generic resilience rhetoric or wellbeing buzzwords.
Built for operational teams, not conference rooms
Sessions are 90 minutes, practical, and designed to fit around a working day.
No two-day away-days or 400-slide decks.
Endurance athlete perspective
Performance under sustained pressure, recovery, and deliberate practice aren't abstract - they're how I train and compete. That lived experience shapes how I teach.
